This is a sidebar to my study visit notes about Les Rencontres de la Photographie as it is an inspiring example of how to take the bull by the horns when exhibiting and selling work.
We had noticed paste-up images plastered all over Arles with some dramatic black and white shots. I really admire the photographer, Etienne Racine, for making such an effective splash, despite not being part of the official programme for Les Rencontres.
We visited his studio on our last afternoon in Arles and met a lovely, lively and interesting man. He was also very tall but cool enough to get down to Matt’s height when talking with him which I loved. He’d rented out an apartment and converted the two ground floor rooms into a simple gallery space. It worked really well. There were several other visitors in the hour or so that we spent there and many were buying prints and posters. Excellent self-promotion so chapeau to Etienne. We are really looking forward to seeing him again next year.
And he was kind enough to let me photograph him.
